Lantern Reroofing Completed
Volunteers including Bob Vessely and Mike Fairbrother are seen here assessing the project prior to the reroofing. Originally, the volunteers were planning to replace a copper roof. When they took the old roof off they found a rectangular 10” x 20” pattern in a red material on the wood. After some research, to their surprise, they found that the red substance was flux, a material used with tin roofs. The original lantern roof was indeed tin, just as it had been noted in the original specifications. The Keepers found a company that made replacement patterns in stainless steel coated with tin. Using the original specifications, the lantern roof was restored using this material. The roof has since been completed and the scaffolding has come down.
