Mission Statement
The Purpose of the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers is to
restore, preserve and maintain the Point San Luis Light Station
and to make the historic site accessible for public education
and recreation.
History
The Point San Luis Lighthouse is included in the National
Registry of Historic Places. The Point San Luis Lightstation
near Avila Beach, was built by the U.S. Lighthouse Service
in 1890, and is a critical element of the maritime transportation
and development history of San Luis Obispo County. The
Point San
Luis Lighthouse Keepers are in the process of restoring the
station to its historic appearance and opening it to the
public as a local maritime museum and historic recreation
area.
A dedicated group of volunteers has been working on the
Point San Luis Lighthouse for more than a decade, delicately
doing a lot of the work by hand. The Lighthouse is a beautiful
1890’s Victorian at a gorgeous setting. It is the last
remaining of three lighthouses originally built with this
plan on the West
Coast (there were originally 3 in California). This location
will be a combination of a historical location for schoolchildren
(and children of all ages), a museum that shows how the lighthouse
was part of the Central Coast's history, and an ecological
preserve that will be especially sensitive to the local environment.
Goal
Throw a benefit "fun raiser" for roof repair/replacement
and other restoration/repair/maintenance projects for the
Lightstation as the property is returned to how it looked
in the 1890's.
Volunteers
As with almost all of the work on the Lighthouse, the work
for this benefit is completely done by volunteers.
There are many offers of items and packages for the Silent
and Live Auctions.
We welcome all offers. Original paintings by Anita Hampton,
Ted Slevin and Ken Christianson will be offered during the
Live Auction.
